50 YEARS AGO TODAY I wrote the following postcard from Penzance to my former art tutor, friend and mentor Alexander Mackenzie;
"Dear Alex, I felt I had to break free of the stifling studio situation in London, so I have come down to West Penwith to gain inspiration. I was in Newlyn today and met John Wells, and although he was reluctant to talk, we spoke as he pushed his bicycle up the hill. I am staying in a hostel in Penzance for a second night tonight and then off to camp in a one-man tent somewhere towards Lands End. I saw your show at the Newlyn Orion Gallery! - Best Wishes, Stephen."
